Visitor Experience Specialist – Part-Time The Great Lakes Science Center, in downtown Cleveland, features hundreds of hands-on exhibits on the physical, life and environmental sciences, and is also home to the NASA Glenn Research Center and the historic SS William G. Mather. We are looking for motivated individuals to join our Visitor Experience team. Visitor Experience Specialists are the key to making science come to life for visiting school groups, general public and Science Center members through programs, science shows, cart activities, and informal gallery conversations throughout all of our exhibit areas. This is a part-time position, including weekends. This position reports to the Visitor Experience Supervisor.
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:
•Present hands-on, entertaining and educational live experiences to motivate, stimulate, and challenge visitors.
•Provide consistent quality programming in an educational, customer-focused manner throughout the Science Center through exhibit interpretation, demonstrations, science shows and informal activities in support of GLSC’s mission.
•Perform to a variety of audiences and ages in both school and family groups, and in large assemblies or small “one-on-few” encounters.
•Deliver exhibit interpretation, facilitation and programs throughout GLSC’s signature galleries as well as Traveling Exhibitions, SS William G. Mather, NASA Glenn Visitor Center and other areas.
•Perform daily operational duties including supplies management, equipment upkeep, and maintaining clean materials and props.
•Positively represent the Science Center both on and off-site. Practice exceptional customer service in all interactions with our audiences and their representatives.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Completed or working toward a degree in sciences, education or theater preferred. Comfortable speaking to multi-generational and diverse groups. Must have excellent interpersonal and verbal communication skills, self-motivation, and demonstrate enthusiasm, flexibility, and openness to new ideas. Must be prompt and reliable. Must be able to work in rain or shine, and be able to traverse open decks, navigating steep stairways and high door thresholds, as some shifts may occur aboard an historic steamship. Weekend, evening and holiday hours occasionally required. Candidate must be able to stand for at least one hour and able to lift 40 lbs.
